Mental Health and Tobacco
There are some important associations between mental health and tobacco. Around 35 percent of smokers have a behavioral health disorder. Higher risk populations include those with mood and anxiety disorders. 59% of those diagnosed with major depressive disorder smoke compared to 32% of adults with no mental illness. Higher rates of lifetime smoking are also prevalent in those with bipolar disorder (83%), and schizophrenia (90%). Smokers who have a serious mental illness are at increased risk of dying from cancer, lung disease, and cardiovascular disease.
